Foundations Course
In Ignatian Prayer
Jesus' disciples asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." Prayer is the vital connection between us and our Lord. However, there is often little help with developing our prayer lives. In the history of the Christian Church, this was not always the case. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) developed a way of helping people to pray that emphasizes:
- Contemplating Scripture in a way that considers how God was present to individuals there, and asking, 'How is God wanting to be present to ME today?"
- Learning to notice God's activity not only in set apart prayer times but in all of life.
- God is the 'God of all grace', which is to say, God is a gift giver. As such, we can grow to recognize, receive, and savor daily gifts from God.
- God teaches us how to welcome the movements of God upon our soul, and to resist those movements/thoughts/influences that are contrary to God and to our wellbeing in God.
- Connecting to God in a way that is thoroughly personal, practical, and in the present moment.
The course will involve private prayer exercises, reflective readings, a weekly group meeting (online), and a small group component.
