Foundations Course in Ignatian Prayer

Foundations Course
In Ignatian Prayer

Jesus' disciples asked, "Lord, teach us to pray." Prayer is the vital connection between us and our Lord. However, there is often little help with developing our prayer lives. In the history of the Christian Church, this was not always the case. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) developed a way of helping people to pray that emphasizes:

  • Contemplating Scripture in a way that considers how God was present to individuals there, and asking, 'How is God wanting to be present to ME today?"
  • Learning to notice God's activity not only in set apart prayer times but in all of life.
  • God is the 'God of all grace', which is to say, God is a gift giver. As such, we can grow to recognize, receive, and savor daily gifts from God.
  • God teaches us how to welcome the movements of God upon our soul, and to resist those movements/thoughts/influences that are contrary to God and to our wellbeing in God.
  • Connecting to God in a way that is thoroughly personal, practical, and in the present moment.

The course will involve private prayer exercises, reflective readings, a weekly group meeting (online), and a small group component.

To spend a minimum of 15 minutes of prayer, at least 5 days of each week, for the four weeks of this course. We will provide you with material for prayer.
Each week you will be sent 2 short portions to read. You will read them and respond in writing to a few reflection questions on what you have read. You will then email in your responses and be prepared to share one of those responses in the small group setting. When we see God at work in others, it helps us to better recognize God at work in us.
It is important that each of us strictly respect the confidentiality of other participants on this course. We will not grow if we cannot be vulnerable, and we will not be vulnerable if what we share is at risk of being shared outside the course.
The cost of this course is $100 US. This can be paid at Application or monthly in 4 equal portions. If you are unable to afford that amount, please let us know as scholarships are available. Arrupe Community believes that if an applicant is called by God to attend one of its programs, finances should not be a barrier.
